Using TimeToast in class!

It was my first time using TimeToast. I took the opportunity of using these final days before Easter, to put this activity into practice and do something different from the activities that we usually do in class.

Among the learning objectives, the focus was on accepting and valuing a foreign culture and comparing it to their own culture. I think culture is essential when talking about foreign languages. Furthermore, another learning objective was to improve their reading and writing skills. They had to look for the information of these different people’s lives and also, when they didn’t find the information in English, they had to translate it from English to Spanish. I asked them to investigate a famous person born in an English speaking country. They had to create a timeline including all the important events of that person’s life.

The steps they had to follow where the following:

  1. Look for a famous person born in an English speaking country.

  2. Make a list of all the important events that have happened in his/her life.

  3. Watch the video of the tutorial which explains how to use TimeToast

  4. Log in on TimeToast & explain the difference between event and timespan

  5. Include the events

  6. Make the timeline public

  7. Copy the link and post it on the task uploaded on Google Classroom

Since it was my first time using this app, I found problems on how to sign in, with passwords, etcetera. This slowed down the process. Then, using the app the second session, some of them couldn’t edit the timeline since the configuration was changed and they had to click again “edit”. All these small things happened since I didn’t know how to use it in these different cases. Next time, I would definitely create a presentation explaining all the possible issues that may take place while doing them. In my opinion, creating timelines can help students to get a broader view of events. Also, organise them chronologically, and, if they have to study a history period, it would be easier for them to remember the events and dates.

Here you can see some of the timelines that my students have created:
