Project on Genially: Birthday Party
In this case, students from 1st CSE, were asked to plan a friend’s birthday party. They were asked to create a presentation using Genially. In the slides, they had to include information about the party.
The first step was to look on the Internet for pictures that they could find as inspiration for the birthday party they wanted to organize. Once they had the party they wanted in mind in terms of decoration and activities to do, it was time to set a budget. Actually, the budget was given to them, so that they knew how much they could spend.
Their final mission was to create a presentation on Genially in which they explained and showed to the rest how their birthday party was going to be… the decoration, food, was there going to be a food truck? a dj?... They had to investigate typical birthday parties in the UK and US. Furthermore, they were asked to design a birthday party invitation using the app Canva.
The key thing here was to make the rest of the students imagine how the party was going to be, with pictures of how they would like it to be, the place, among other things. This project was planned to be accomplished in class, within 6 sessions. The first step was for me to show them how to use Genially (they already knew how to use Canva), and then, giving them the rest of the session to set the groups and distribute roles. In this case, I allowed them to organize it themselves. The rest of the session, students created a brainstorm on a piece of paper, and then, organized those ideas. The second session was for them to look for inspiration on the Internet. How was their birthday party going to be?
The next two sessions were given to them to create the presentation. The next session (5th session) was for them to design the invitation on Canva, and the final session was for presentations and peer-assessment.
Apart from the rubrics that I am going to attach, I also use a work log sheet, in which students have to record who does what and it has to be signed by each of the members of the group. In this case, I make sure that the project has been completed by all the students.
By using Genially, my students have had the opportunity to know another tool to create interactive presentations and many other things that will be useful for them in the future when they have to create digital projects. I think that what I would change for the next time, is the fact of allowing students to set the roles in each group since lower level students' self-esteem can be affected by this because they have not been given the opportunity to choose the role they would like to have. I think that sometimes it is complicated to find a balance in these cases. On the one hand, I want them to be independent, but, on the other, I think that allowing them to choose their own groups and roles is too much. I need to keep working on this.
